About MMclay

MMclay is a San Francisco-based ceramic design and production studio founded by artist and designer MaryMar Keenan. We produce handmade tableware and lighting for some of the best restaurants in the country, interior designers, and tables all over the world.

We’re a small, creative and hardworking team that cares deeply about quality, beauty, craftsmanship and creating a genuinely welcoming experience for everyone who walks through our doors.

The position

MMclay is looking for a part time weekend Retail & Shipping Assistant who is warm, organized, detail-oriented, and excited to learn the ins and outs of a small creative business.

This is an entry-level position with room to grow. You’ll work closely with our Retail & Shipping Manager and the rest of the MMclay team, helping with everything from welcoming customers into our showroom to packing and shipping pottery around the country.

We’re looking for someone who enjoys people, takes pride in doing things well, and isn’t afraid to jump in wherever needed. You don’t need to come to us knowing everything — we’re happy to train the right person — but you should be curious, dependable, comfortable taking initiative, and excited about the possibility of taking on more responsibility over time.

What we’re looking for

  • Warm, personable and comfortable talking with all kinds of people

  • Organized and detail-oriented

  • Dependable, punctual and able to follow through

  • A willingness to learn and ask questions

  • Comfortable with technology and excited to learn Shopify, shipping software and our internal systems

  • Able to move between tasks and priorities in a busy studio environment

  • Someone who notices what needs to be done and is willing to jump in

  • Able to work independently once trained

  • Graceful and resourceful when things get busy

  • Available to work weekends and some holidays

  • Retail, hospitality or customer service experience is helpful, but not required

  • Experience with ceramics or craft is absolutely not necessary — but an appreciation for handmade objects and design is a plus

What you’ll do

Retail & Customer Experience

  • Welcome visitors into the MMclay showroom and help them find the right pieces

  • Learn the MMclay product lines and what makes our handmade work unique

  • Answer basic product questions in person, by phone and online

  • Process sales using Shopify

  • Help create a warm, inviting and beautifully maintained showroom

  • Restock and merchandise products

  • Assist with opening and closing the showroom

  • Help with MMclay events and special sales

Shipping & Fulfillment

  • Carefully pack pottery for customer orders, wholesale accounts and local pickups

  • Learn our packing standards and shipping procedures

  • Process shipments using our shipping software

  • Help receive, organize and fulfill online orders

  • Assist with inventory counts and stock organization

Opportunity to Grow

We would love to find someone who is interested in growing with MMclay.

This role is designed as an entry point into our retail and shipping operations, with the opportunity to learn more about inventory, fulfillment, customer relationships, wholesale accounts, e-commerce and the systems behind a small design and manufacturing business.

For the right person, we hope this position can grow into greater responsibility and eventually a leadership role within Retail & Shipping.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to comfortably lift approximately 30 lbs

  • Comfortable with repetitive reaching, lifting, bending and kneeling

  • Comfortable using ladders and working within our shipping and storage areas

How to apply

If this sounds like you, please apply with your resume and a short note telling us a little about yourself and why you’re interested in working at MMclay.

We’re excited to meet you!
